Elevation Certificate Review

If your property is in a FEMA-designated high-risk flood zone, an Elevation Certificate is essential. It shows the elevation of your home’s lowest floor relative to the surrounding ground — critical data that can affect your flood insurance requirements.

Why it matters

If your Lowest Adjacent Grade (LAG) is higher than the Base Flood Elevation (BFE), you may be eligible for a FEMA Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA). A successful LOMA can officially remove your property from the high-risk flood zone — and eliminate the requirement for costly flood insurance.

Don’t have an Elevation Certificate? Here’s how to find one:

  • Check your closing documents. Sometimes an Elevation Certificate is included when you buy the home.

  • Contact your local building department. They may have one on file or in your permit records.

  • Ask the builder. If the home is relatively new, the builder may have commissioned one.

  • Hire a licensed surveyor. If no existing certificate is available, a local, state-licensed land surveyor can create one for you.

🛈 Cost varies by location, so it’s a good idea to get a few quotes.
